Meter Preparation¶
For the WattWächter to capture all meter data completely, many electricity meters must first be unlocked. Without unlocking, most meters only provide a limited data set.
Why is unlocking necessary?¶
For privacy reasons, modern digital electricity meters are configured by default to only output a minimal data set via the optical interface. To access the extended data set (e.g., current power, detailed consumption values), the meter must be unlocked with a PIN.
Request PIN from your network operator
You can obtain the PIN from your network operator (not your electricity provider!). Usually, a short email or phone call is sufficient. The PIN is free of charge and is typically provided within a few days.
You can find your network operator on your electricity bill or on the meter itself.
PIN entry via the optical button¶
The PIN is entered via the optical button on the electricity meter. This button is operated by shining a flashlight on it.
Procedure:
-
Start PIN entry — Briefly shine light on the optical button (usually a small field next to the display).
-
Wait for display test — The meter first performs a display test where all segments light up briefly.
-
Enter first digit — The first digit of the PIN is now displayed (usually
0). Short light pulses increase the displayed digit by 1 each time. -
Move to next digit — If no light pulse is detected for about 3 seconds, the meter automatically switches to the next digit.
-
Enter all digits — Repeat the process for all digits of the PIN.
Tip
Use a flashlight with a focused beam. Smartphone flashlights often work well. Hold the light close to the optical button and give short, clear light pulses.
Additional settings (on some meters)¶
On some electricity meter models, additional settings must be configured in the menu after entering the PIN:
| Setting | Meaning |
|---|---|
Pin → Off |
Permanently disables PIN verification. |
Inf → On |
Enables output of the extended data set via the IR interface. |
Note
The exact menu navigation varies depending on the meter model. Check your meter's manual or ask your network operator for instructions.
After unlocking¶
After successful unlocking, the meter provides the extended data set. The WattWächter can now read all available values:
- Current power (Watts)
- Meter reading consumption (kWh)
- Meter reading feed-in (kWh) — if available
- Additional detailed values depending on the meter model
You can tell the unlocking was successful when the WattWächter dashboard shows the current power and not just the meter readings.
Available data varies
Which data your meter provides depends on the configuration by the manufacturer or network operator. Some meters only provide basic data (meter reading, power), while others include additional values like voltage, current, or phase power. This configuration cannot be changed by the end user.
Next step: Initial Setup — Connect the device and set up WiFi
